PGGC-11 Library
The Library
of Post Graduate Government College,
Sector-11, Chandigarh (PGGC-11) is one of the oldest and most
well-established academic libraries in the region. Since the inception of the
college, the library has played a vital role in supporting the teaching, learning, and research
activities of students and faculty. Initially, the library started with
a modest collection of books and
limited resources, primarily catering to undergraduate courses. Over the
years, with the expansion of academic programmes and introduction of
postgraduate courses, the library collection has grown significantly in terms
of volume, diversity, and quality.
The development of the PGGC-11 Library has been guided by the dedicated
services of its librarians, who have played a vital role in shaping the library
into a modern academic resource centre. Since its establishment, the library
has been managed by qualified and committed library professionals who
contributed to the systematic organization, expansion of collections, and improvement of
services. In the
early years, librarians focused on building a strong foundation by developing
the core collection and implementing standard practices of cataloguing and
classification. With the advancement of information technology, successive
librarians introduced automation and digital initiatives, enhancing access to
information and improving user services.
Layout
of the Library
The library is located in the first floor of the college comprising of
one main hall (5441 Sq.Ft.) and a separate Reference section (2450 Sq. Ft.) and
one Reading Room (Periodical Section)(1594 Sq.Ft.). The library is divided into
the following sections:
1. Acquisition section: Acquires books to enrich
library collection.
2. Technical section: Processing of procured books
by classification and cataloguing.
3. Circulation section: for (issue/return,
reserve/renewal, membership registration overdue collection etc.)
4. Text book section: this section holds the books
designated to support the ongoing teaching in the college. (books related to syllabus)
5. Reference section: one can consult reference
collection such as dictionaries, encyclopaedias, yearbooks, handbooks etc.
6. Rare book section: the library is proud to
possess approx. 200 rare books that include the books on
art/lexicography/religion/history etc. Including the handwritten poetry book of
hindi poetess Mahadevi Verma.
7. Periodical section: Magazines, Journals and Newspapers
are available here.
8. Digital section: 10 computer terminals
are placed to access e-resources and online databases (n-list database) in
which 2 terminals are kept for visually challenged students with jaws software.
9. Binding section: this section is equipped with
all the necessary equipment for binding books, current journals and other
materials. The binding section is equipped with extra facilities of lamination
machine and spiral binding machine.
Heritage Corner
A joint venture of the Alumni Association and college authorities,
Heritage corner in the college library showcase the furniture of Le
Corbusier Era restored from the college premises. The Gallery was inaugurated
by Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Sh. Pawan Kumar Bansal on 26th May,
2012.The gallery includes complete office furniture with three office chairs,
an executive desk, two easy chairs and two stools.
The library
has continuously evolved by adopting modern
library practices, including classification, cataloguing, and user-oriented
services. With the advancement of technology, PGGC-11 Library has embraced automation, implementing systems like LIBSYS
for library management. In recent years, the library has made significant
progress towards becoming a digital
knowledge hub, providing access to e-books, e-journals, and online databases through initiatives like
N-LIST and aligning with the vision of One
Nation One Subscription (ONOS). The library also maintains an institutional repository, preserving
valuable academic content such as question papers, research work, and college publications.
Today, PGGC-11 Library stands as a modern,
user-centric learning resource centre, committed to providing innovative services, digital access, and
academic support to its users. It continues to evolve in response to
changing educational needs, aiming to offer anytime, anywhere access to information.
In recent years, the library has
made significant progress towards digitalization by providing access to
e-resources through N-LIST and aligning with initiatives such as One Nation One
Subscription (ONOS). Today, it functions as a user-oriented digital library,
supporting teaching, learning, and research with both print and electronic
resources.

years, under the leadership of Dr. Amar Nath Sharma (Librarian),
the library has further progressed towards becoming a digital and user-centric
knowledge hub. Emphasis has been laid on e-resource
utilization, digital services, and alignment with national initiatives like One
Nation One Subscription (ONOS). The continuous efforts of librarians over
the years have significantly contributed to the growth, modernization, and academic relevance
of the PGGC-11 Library. The PGGC-11 Library has transformed into a modern hybrid library,
integrating both traditional and digital resources. Its continuous growth and
development reflect its commitment to supporting quality education,
research, and digital learning.
